Endam Home of Hope Strengthens Commitment to Early Childhood Education in Humanitarian Crises “Every child deserves a strong start. Every dream deserves a chance.” At Endam Home of Hope, we believe that lasting change begins in the earliest years of a child’s life. When children have access to quality early childhood education, they gain more than academic skills, they develop confidence, resilience, emotional well-being, and the foundation they need to thrive throughout their lives. This commitment was recently reinforced as our Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Yvonne Ndaga, participated in a high-level workshop on Preparing a Fundraising Document for Early Childhood Education in Humanitarian Crises, organized by Moving Minds Alliance in collaboration with REACH. The workshop convened humanitarian practitioners, development organizations, and advocacy leaders committed to strengthening investment in early childhood education for children living in crisis-affected communities. Why Early Childhood Education Matters in Humanitarian Settings Across the world, millions of children are growing up amid conflict, forced displacement, climate emergencies, and other humanitarian crises. These challenging environments often interrupt learning, threaten children’s wellbeing, and limit opportunities during the most critical years of development. Research consistently shows that the first years of a child’s life are fundamental to lifelong learning, health, and emotional development. Humanitarian organizations increasingly recognize that investing in early childhood development is one of the most effective ways to protect children, strengthen families, and build resilient communities. For refugee and vulnerable children, early childhood education offers: Building Capacity to Create Greater Impact The fundraising workshop provided an important platform for learning, collaboration, and knowledge exchange on sustainable financing strategies for Early Childhood Education in Emergencies (ECDEiE). By participating in this initiative, Endam Home of Hope continues to strengthen its institutional capacity to mobilize resources, build strategic partnerships, and design impactful programmes that respond to the evolving needs of children affected by displacement and humanitarian crises. For our organization, fundraising is not simply about securing financial resources, it is about creating opportunities for children to access quality education, protection, and hope regardless of the circumstances into which they were born. Advancing Our Mission At Endam Home of Hope, education remains one of the strongest pathways toward restoring dignity and transforming lives. Our work with refugee and vulnerable communities is guided by the belief that every child deserves an opportunity to learn, play, grow, and reach their full potential. Through strategic partnerships, community-led programmes, and evidence-based interventions, we continue working toward inclusive educational opportunities that leave no child behind. Beyond the Funding Crisis: Why Refugee-Led Organizations Must Be at the Center of Humanitarian Action

For many organizations working on the frontlines of displacement, the current humanitarian funding crisis is not a new reality—it is simply a continuation of challenges they have navigated for years. As governments and international agencies grapple with shrinking humanitarian budgets, refugee-led organizations continue doing what they have always done: responding to urgent needs, empowering communities, and creating lasting solutions with limited resources. Our Founder and Executive Director, Dr. Yvonne Ndaga Endam, recently shared this perspective in a powerful feature highlighting the lived realities of refugee-led organizations in Nigeria. Since founding Endam Home of Hope (EHHOP) in 2018, Dr. Endam has led efforts to support refugees and internally displaced persons through skills development, livelihoods, protection, healthcare, education, and economic empowerment—often relying on personal commitment and locally mobilized resources rather than traditional humanitarian funding. This story challenges an important assumption within the humanitarian sector. The question is not simply how to respond to funding cuts. It is also how to transform a system that has historically left local and refugee-led organizations at its margins. Refugee-led organizations possess the lived experience, local trust, cultural understanding, and community relationships needed to deliver sustainable and inclusive solutions. Yet many continue to face barriers to accessing funding, participating in decision-making, and influencing humanitarian priorities. At Endam Home of Hope, we believe that localization must move beyond policy discussions and become meaningful practice. This means investing directly in local leadership, shifting decision-making power closer to affected communities, honoring Grand Bargain commitments, and recognizing refugee-led organizations as equal partners—not just implementing agencies. Despite limited resources, our work continues to demonstrate what community-led action can achieve. From vocational training and sustainable livelihoods to women’s empowerment, agricultural initiatives, and refugee integration, every program is built on the belief that displaced people are not passive recipients of aid—they are innovators, entrepreneurs, leaders, and changemakers. The humanitarian sector has an opportunity to rethink how it supports frontline organizations. Sustainable impact will only be achieved when those closest to the challenges are equally close to the resources and decisions that shape humanitarian responses. How Two Hectares of Farmland Are Cultivating Hope for Refugees and Displaced Families Every act of kindness leaves a footprint. Sometimes, it arrives not as applause, but as a handwritten letter filled with gratitude, hope, and renewed purpose. At Endam Home of Hope (EHHOP), we recently received a heartfelt letter from representatives of refugee and internally displaced person (IDP) communities expressing their sincere appreciation for the farmland support provided during the last farming season. While the letter itself was simple, its message carried profound meaning. For the women, families, and displaced individuals who gained access to two hectares of farmland, this support represented far more than land. It represented opportunity, dignity, and the chance to rebuild lives through productive work. More Than Land, A Foundation for New Beginnings Displacement often strips people of the resources they need to sustain themselves. Yet, when communities are given access to productive assets, they regain more than economic opportunity—they regain confidence, independence, and hope. The two hectares of farmland provided by Endam Home of Hope became a place where vulnerable households could cultivate crops, strengthen food security, and reduce their dependence on humanitarian assistance. Every seed planted reflected resilience. Every harvest represented progress toward self-reliance. The appreciation expressed by community representatives reminds us that meaningful development begins by investing in people’s ability to support themselves. April marks Sexual Assault Awareness Month, a time to reflect, but more importantly, to act. This month calls us to go beyond awareness posts and hashtags, and commit to real change in our communities. At Endam Home of Hope (EHHOP), we believe that ending sexual violence starts with intentional conversations, safer spaces, stronger systems of accountability, and a culture where survivors are met with belief, not blame. Too many people continue to carry their experiences in silence. Shame, fear, and stigma often make speaking up feel impossible. That is why creating environments where survivors feel safe, supported, and respected is not optional, it is a shared responsibility. Whether in our homes, schools, workplaces, or online spaces, each of us has a role to play in challenging harmful norms and ending the normalization of gender-based violence. Now, I create it.” This is what a refugee lady says about her newfound life. It shows the misconception that refugees are only in need of safety. They need opportunity and support. When people flee, they lose everything, including their ability to work and care for themselves. However, research suggests that providing refugees with livelihood opportunities is one of the most effective measures according to UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. It restores independence, resilience, and a sense of purpose, allowing refugees to get back on their feet. That is the gap where Endam Home of Hope (EHHOP), founded by a refugee woman Yvonne Ndaga fills. 𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝘂𝗴𝗲𝗲𝘀 In Nigeria, the road for refugee women towards being independent and able to provide is obstructed by many factors: • Lack of access to formal employment • Insufficient startup capital • Incomplete education and lack of necessary skills • Language differences and other social and cultural problems • Systematic constraints According to research, all these factors make it difficult for refugees to seek out income opportunities despite their willingness and capacity to work. Therefore, providing refugees with targeted assistance will ensure that their potential is unlocked. Livelihood Programs and Opportunities Provided by Endam Home of Hope (EHHOP) Since its foundation in 2018, EHHOP has been helping refugees to create stable and productive lives. As our program works with refugees, we have a good understanding of the situation and how to deal with it. 🐔 𝗣𝗼𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗙𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 As part of the Endam Home of Hope (EHHOP) activities, refugees can get engaged in poultry farming. It helps them in several ways: • Daily earnings from egg sales • Better nutrition • Organic fertilizer for farming purposes Indeed, according to research, agricultural activities greatly improve the health and well-being of refugees and increase self-sufficiency. One of our beneficiaries was once dependent on food aid. Now she runs a small poultry farm. Every day she sells eggs not only to feed herself but to earn money too. 𝗦𝗲𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 & 𝗦𝘁𝘆𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴: 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲𝘀 Endam Home of Hope (EHHOP) offers women vocational skills that are: • Valuable • Mobile • Immediately profitable The connection between vocational education and employment success has been proven by numerous studies that highlight its significant impact on income generation. Once trained in tailoring, refugee women started sewing clothes for their communities. They established small tailoring businesses, trained other women, and transitioned from being students to mentors. 🌱 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲: 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 EHHOP‘s agricultural interventions exceed planting seeds, cultivating autonomy. Assistance includes: • Supply of seeds • Land rental • Farming training • Organic fertilizer production lessons Through agricultural training, refugees become food secure, earn money, and integrate economically into their environments. Provided with seeds and land, they began growing vegetables. Nowadays, they feed their families and sell excess produce at local markets transforming hardship into harvest. 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗱𝘀 What starts as education turns into empowerment. Beneficiaries of EHHOP‘s programs undergo an incredible trajectory: 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗶𝘃𝗲 → 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 → 𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲 They begin to: • Cater to their family needs consistently • Creates and expands small-scale enterprises • Accumulate savings and invest in themselves • Contribute economically to the local economy It echoes a wider global consensus: According to UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, livelihood programs help refugees break away from aid dependency and build self-sufficiency. 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝗲 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁: 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 Every intervention tells a tale of transformation: “Prior to the training, I was dependent on aid. Today, I sell vegetables and eggs and take care of my children.” “I underwent tailoring training and currently earn enough to cover my children’s school fees.” “We no longer hunger; we grow our own food.” These are not individual achievements but multiplying facts. Income levels up. Self-confidence returns. Hope materializes. 𝗡𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗯𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: 𝗕𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗹𝘀 EHHOP‘s success is not just empowering individuals-it is empowering communities. These include: • Improved food security • Local job creation • Increased economic activity • Better refugee-host community relations FAO demonstrates that livelihood and agriculture programs are effective in improving social and economic inclusion for refugees and host communities alike. Previously disadvantaged communities now share in the prosperity. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗮𝘆 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 The need is great-the opportunity is great. Health Without Borders: A Call to Care for Refugees This World Health Day

The world unites each year on April 7 to celebrate World Health Day, a time to reflect, recommit, and reimagine what health means to all. However, nowadays, the question that we also need to explore is, does health for all also cover refugees? Over 117 million individuals have been forcefully displaced all over the world with many escaping war, calamity, and inexplicable suffering. Almost half of them are children, born in to the world without certainty but with hope. The faces behind these figures are individuals, mothers who want to deliver safely, children who require vaccinations, young individuals who have to cope with trauma, and families who want to be dignified. Health is not to them a service, but a life, a healing, a means of restoring their lives. The Hidden Health Crisis Refugees are commonly confronted with a tangle of health issues. Their travels subject them to poor environments, inaccessibility of clean water, food, shelter, and basic healthcare. These facts predispose the risk of infectious diseases, injuries, and chronic diseases. But there is a more secret battle, beyond the physical health, mental health. Loss, violence, and years of uncertainty are some of the invisible wounds that many refugees carry. The presence of anxiety, depression, and trauma, as well as the access to mental health support, is not an exception. When they go to safer places, obstacles will remain: These obstacles imply that the health outcomes of a large number of refugees are worse than they are naturally, since many systems are not designed to accommodate them. Why Refugee Health Matters to All of Us Health is a human right. It does not require nationality, status, and borders. It is an easy principle no one should be left behind. Inclusive health systems are not just helpful to refugees, but also to all communities. Refugees can be productive workers, nurturers, innovators and community constructors when they are healthy. Indeed, they are actively involved in promoting health systems per se, as professionals and champions of fair treatment. The health of refugees is not a charity but common development. The Role of Endam Home of Hope (EHHOP) At Endam Home of Hope (EHHOP), this belief is lived every day. EHHOP stands as a bridge, connecting compassion with action, and vulnerability with dignity.
