Endam Home of Hope Strengthens Commitment to Early Childhood Education in Humanitarian Crises “Every child deserves a strong start. This commitment was recently reinforced as our Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Yvonne Ndaga, participated in a high-level workshop on Preparing a Fundraising Document for Early Childhood Education in Humanitarian Crises, organized by Moving Minds Alliance in collaboration with REACH. The workshop convened humanitarian practitioners, development organizations, and advocacy leaders committed to strengthening investment in early childhood education for children living in crisis-affected communities. Why Early Childhood Education Matters in Humanitarian Settings Across the world, millions of children are growing up amid conflict, forced displacement, climate emergencies, and other humanitarian crises. These challenging environments often interrupt learning, threaten children’s wellbeing, and limit opportunities during the most critical years of development. Research consistently shows that the first years of a child’s life are fundamental to lifelong learning, health, and emotional development. Humanitarian organizations increasingly recognize that investing in early childhood development is one of the most effective ways to protect children, strengthen families, and build resilient communities. For refugee and vulnerable children, early childhood education offers: Building Capacity to Create Greater Impact The fundraising workshop provided an important platform for learning, collaboration, and knowledge exchange on sustainable financing strategies for Early Childhood Education in Emergencies (ECDEiE). By participating in this initiative, Endam Home of Hope continues to strengthen its institutional capacity to mobilize resources, build strategic partnerships, and design impactful programmes that respond to the evolving needs of children affected by displacement and humanitarian crises. For our organization, fundraising is not simply about securing financial resources, it is about creating opportunities for children to access quality education, protection, and hope regardless of the circumstances into which they were born. Beyond the Funding Crisis: Why Refugee-Led Organizations Must Be at the Center of Humanitarian Action

For many organizations working on the frontlines of displacement, the current humanitarian funding crisis is not a new reality—it is simply a continuation of challenges they have navigated for years. As governments and international agencies grapple with shrinking humanitarian budgets, refugee-led organizations continue doing what they have always done: responding to urgent needs, empowering communities, and creating lasting solutions with limited resources. Our Founder and Executive Director, Dr. Yvonne Ndaga Endam, recently shared this perspective in a powerful feature highlighting the lived realities of refugee-led organizations in Nigeria. Since founding Endam Home of Hope (EHHOP) in 2018, Dr. Endam has led efforts to support refugees and internally displaced persons through skills development, livelihoods, protection, healthcare, education, and economic empowerment—often relying on personal commitment and locally mobilized resources rather than traditional humanitarian funding. This story challenges an important assumption within the humanitarian sector. The question is not simply how to respond to funding cuts. It is also how to transform a system that has historically left local and refugee-led organizations at its margins. This means investing directly in local leadership, shifting decision-making power closer to affected communities, honoring Grand Bargain commitments, and recognizing refugee-led organizations as equal partners—not just implementing agencies. Despite limited resources, our work continues to demonstrate what community-led action can achieve. From vocational training and sustainable livelihoods to women’s empowerment, agricultural initiatives, and refugee integration, every program is built on the belief that displaced people are not passive recipients of aid—they are innovators, entrepreneurs, leaders, and changemakers. The humanitarian sector has an opportunity to rethink how it supports frontline organizations. Sustainable impact will only be achieved when those closest to the challenges are equally close to the resources and decisions that shape humanitarian responses. April marks Sexual Assault Awareness Month, a time to reflect, but more importantly, to act. This month calls us to go beyond awareness posts and hashtags, and commit to real change in our communities. At Endam Home of Hope (EHHOP), we believe that ending sexual violence starts with intentional conversations, safer spaces, stronger systems of accountability, and a culture where survivors are met with belief, not blame. Too many people continue to carry their experiences in silence. Shame, fear, and stigma often make speaking up feel impossible. That is why creating environments where survivors feel safe, supported, and respected is not optional, it is a shared responsibility. Whether in our homes, schools, workplaces, or online spaces, each of us has a role to play in challenging harmful norms and ending the normalization of gender-based violence. While awareness is important, meaningful change happens when individuals, organizations, and communities commit to action beyond a single month. At Endam Home of Hope (EHHOP), we believe that every person deserves to live free from fear, violence, and abuse. We recognize that preventing sexual assault is not solely the responsibility of institutions or governments; it is a shared responsibility that begins in our homes, schools, workplaces, faith communities, and public spaces. Breaking the Silence Sexual violence remains one of the most underreported forms of violence worldwide. Many survivors choose not to speak about their experiences due to fear, shame, stigma, or concerns that they will not be believed. This silence can prevent access to justice, healing, and essential support services. Creating a culture where survivors are treated with dignity, compassion, and respect is fundamental to ending this cycle. A survivor-centred approach, one that prioritizes safety, confidentiality, informed consent, and respect for survivors’ choices, is widely recognized as a cornerstone of effective prevention and response. Prevention Begins with Education Preventing sexual violence starts long before harm occurs. It begins with education that promotes respect, healthy relationships, equality, and an understanding of personal boundaries and consent. Evidence shows that age-appropriate education helps young people develop healthy relationships, make informed decisions, and recognize abusive behaviour while challenging harmful gender norms. At Endam Home of Hope, we believe education empowers individuals and communities to become active participants in creating safer environments for everyone. Families who once lived ordinary lives are suddenly uprooted, leaving behind their homes, livelihoods, communities, and cherished memories. For many, displacement is not a choice, it is a matter of survival. According to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), more than 122 million people were forcibly displaced worldwide during 2025 due to war, persecution, and violence, making forced displacement one of the most urgent humanitarian challenges of our generation. While updated end-of-2025 figures show fluctuations in global displacement, the scale of the crisis remains unprecedented and continues to demand international action. Beyond the Numbers: The Human Cost of Displacement Statistics help us understand the magnitude of the crisis, but they cannot fully capture the emotional and physical realities refugees face every day. Imagine leaving home with only a few belongings, uncertain if you will ever return. Imagine saying goodbye to your community without knowing where your next meal, shelter, or source of safety will come from. For millions of refugees, this is not imagination, it is daily life. Many arrive in overcrowded refugee camps or temporary settlements where access to clean water, nutritious food, healthcare, sanitation, and protection is limited. The uncertainty of displacement often extends for months or even years, leaving families struggling to rebuild their lives while living far from home. Beyond the physical hardships, displacement often causes profound emotional trauma. Families are separated, loved ones are lost, and communities that once offered stability are torn apart.
